Board of State Canvassers Moves Up July Meeting — A Date Change Worth Watching for Ballot Initiatives

Westland residents and advocacy groups tracking Michigan's statewide ballot now have an earlier Lansing date to circle: July 24, not July 31. The Michigan Board of State Canvassers canceled its regularly scheduled July 31, 2026, meeting and will instead hold a special meeting on July 24, 2026. The Michigan Department of State announced the schedule change on July 8, 2026.

The July 24 meeting will be held at 10 a.m. at the Binsfeld Office Building in Lansing, will be livestreamed, and will have an agenda posted on the board's website in advance.

The Board of State Canvassers is a four-member body responsible for canvassing and certifying election results, verifying signature sufficiency on candidate nominating petitions and ballot proposal petitions, assigning ballot designations, and adopting ballot language for statewide ballot proposals. The Michigan Bureau of Elections reviews petition signatures and makes recommendations to the board.

The board is expected to consider the Michiganders for Money Out of Politics petition at its July 24 meeting. The Michigan Bureau of Elections has recommended the petition be certified and transmitted to the Legislature, finding approximately 368,762 valid signatures — above the required threshold of 356,958.

The board's decision on petition sufficiency comes ahead of a September 4 deadline to certify ballot contents to county clerks. Moving the meeting one week earlier compresses the window between the board's decision and subsequent action deadlines for statewide measures.

While the Board of State Canvassers handles statewide petition initiatives and candidate certifications rather than local ballot measures, the campaign finance initiative and other statewide proposals will appear on the same November ballot Westland residents vote on.
