Wayne-Westland School Board Met July 20: Budget, Staffing and Policy Items on the Agenda

With the 2026-27 school year weeks away, the Wayne-Westland Community Schools Board of Education met Monday evening, July 20, 2026, at 7 p.m. The meeting gave the board a public forum for reports, resident concerns and decisions that can affect classroom staffing, district services and taxpayer-funded spending before students return.

That scrutiny carries added weight after the district's recent financial crisis. An audit revealed a $17 million budget deficit in 2023-2024 after the district had believed it had a surplus; the shortfall was later cited as nearly $30 million when unbudgeted staff raises and clerical errors were included. The latest district budget publicly available is the 2025-26 Amended Budget, approved Feb. 9, 2026. Wayne-Westland Community Schools had not publicly posted a 2026-27 budget as of July 2026.

The July 20 agenda included a Superintendent's Report and Comments from Superintendent John Dignan, Ed.D., and a public comment period designated as Citizen's Comments: Non-Agenda Items (General), allowing residents to address the board on matters of concern. The Wayne-Westland Community Schools Board of Education includes Melandie Hines (Board President), Frederick Weaver, Th.D. (Board Vice President), David Cox (Board Secretary), Andrew Ambrus (Board Treasurer), LeWanna Abney-Mitchell (Board Trustee), Kimberly R. May and Mark F. Neal. Three current board members—Ambrus, Hines and May—have terms that expire on Dec. 31, 2026, meaning their seats will be up for election in November 2026.

With those three seats on the ballot, residents have both immediate engagement opportunities at upcoming monthly meetings and the chance to choose new representation this fall.
